I have not posted here in a while due to some personal issues (pulled groin). But it looks like all is well now.

Here is a nice 9 mile run in the city's dirty and gritty southwest side.

This is West Jefferson. Yes Jefferson turns into an old cobble stone street near and after the bridge. In fact, some sections still have the trolley tracks embedded in the streets.



Down Fort Street is an old restaurant that we run past. We often wonder what it would be like to get a meal there. Any takers?

Remember getting on the Boblo boat? Somehow this area was prettier back in the 70s.

Swimmers: s1, s2, s3 & s4

Canoe: c1

Land support: potentially L1

Equipment needed:

• Identification – everyone who is going to be in the water (swimming or boat) needs ID
• Vehicle #1: me
• Vehicle #2: c1
• Canoe: me +paddles, life jacket (at least one, maybe more), 5 additional flotation devices (1/swimmer + one for the dry bag)
• Dry bag: me, we can put the IDs in here + car keys for vehicle 1. Don’t bring any heavy stuff – I don’t want this thing to sink!

Schedule:

• 5:50 am: everyone assembles on B2, check equipment & load into V1 & V2
• 6:00 am: drop V2 @ Coast Guard parking lot, leave towels there, transfer everyone to V1
• 6:10 am: arrive Belle Isle upstream from Yacht Club. There is some crazy industrial art at the site, since I’m driving V1 I don’t have to describe it too much. Unload canoe & equipment. Pack dry bag, put shoes on canoe (securely).
• 6:20 am: snap photo
• 6:25 am: start swimming (~2.2 miles)
• 6:32 am: sunrise
• ~7:35 am: arrive at park next to Coast Guard. Extract Canoe & surviving swimmers
• +10 minutes: Retrieve V1, leaving guard(s) to watch canoe
• +20 minutes: Return to Coast Guard, pack canoe, load everyone into V1 & V2
• +30 minutes: Return to CPWR, showers/scrub down
• +40 minutes: Celebrate I2C #2 in the Compuware Café, review pictures, live on in infamy

There is a risk of thunderstorms. If there is lightning or torrential rain that would prevent a boat from seeing the canoe or us I say we abort the attempt. Other than that we are on. Since thunderstorms are quick in & out the call to abort won’t be made till we get to B2 at 5:50.

Riot Run

The Detroit Riot Run. referred to in Detroit and Michigan as the Twelfth Street riot, was a civil disturbance in Detroit, Michigan that began in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 23, 1967. The precipitating event was a police raid of a blind pig on the corner of 12th Street and Clairmount on the city's near westside

I ran this route to check out what the area looks like after all these years later. And, as you will see, it looks like the riots just stopped. When does the clean up crew arrive?

Motown Run

Did you think I would forget to pay homage to the king of Pop?

From my office to Motown is about 8 miles. A nice run and what turned out to be a great day weather wise.





The Motown history

When GM ruled the world, they did it from this building in 1950s.

The three buildings on top use to be WHC for GM. This is where the then CEO, Jack Smith, ordered the demise of Flint.

The Fisher Theatre

I noticed a lot more community green gardens growing around the city. I guess socialism really is a grassroots movement.

Historic Indian Village

Once Upon a time, auto barons used to rule the world and when they did, they lived in Historic Indian Village

The morning was too perfect. No humidity, cool, fresh air. I detoured off Gratiot and did a fly by down the best neighborhood of Detroit. I wish I could walked down this street in 1918.
