I’ve taken this Commuter Challenge thing to a whole new level. I like to come up with new ways to get to work by selecting different routes and modes of transportation. Since I have been doing this for over a year now, people are always asking me how I got to work today? So in this blog, I share my experiences in my travels. I hope you find this inspirational and that you too might find alternative routes and break from those usual patterns. Go ahead, try something new today!

Wings Fly By

Friday and the morning was very warm and the sun was calling for the Harley. So I donned the Winged Wheel and set out for a ride to work.

A Wings Fly By is called for on this special day.

The Spirit of the D is must and see, yes?

These cats are behind enemies lines - but as it turns out, they got the last laugh.

Laura's dance recital is today so I could not stay long.

Eminem shooting a video

Last night, I was working on issues at the office until 7:30pm so no workout or bike home - I jumped on the late bus home.

But I did go out to eat to Forans across the street . I had a couple of pints and fish/chips. On my way back to the office about 8:30pm I saw Eminem shooting a video across the street on Monroe. I stayed for an hour and watched. It was pretty cool. But he looks skinny, pale white, and weak. Not good.

Here was my morning ride on the 10 speed bike. Look, it is 7:30am and NOT ONE SOUL in the city!! You have to be kidding me, what is happening here?

This is where I saw Eminem shooting his video. The inside of this theater is still in good shape. The stage is there along with what once was a beautiful ornate balcony on both sides of the stage.

Just another nice ride to work

The Firehouse on Gratiot - I wish they would convert this to a bar or sell it as a house.

It was 7:00am and I had time to burn. Why not go through the Heidelberg projects?

Laura would like this house!

And what did your commute look like today?

Billy's house. I spent a lot of my high school years in this house on Schoenherr. But the house did not look like this at that time.

More of Billy's house. I wiped out yesterday right next to this house.

First wipe of out the year

Okay so I fell off a bike. Luckily I did not get hurt. I had to maneuver two 90 degree turns.

On the second one there was a bunch of garbage and mud on the sidewalk. My tires slid right out from underneath me. The funny thing was my feet were still clipped into the pedals and I fell sideways along with the bike. Ouch!

After I got up after the fall, I was sooo dizzy I thought I would puke. I sat back down for a while and waited out the pain.

Damage: bent rim and sore knee

I went to the bike store on the way home and purchased a new rim and hard-case tires. I love hard-case tires, especially in the streets of the Detroit.

Smooth Bike Ride

Today's route
http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/us/mi/sterling%20heights/466124414475684129

Well how can I possibly take the car on a morning like this? A crisp 50 degrees, 6:00am and the birds are singing. Time to mount the bike and head on in.

Look at this – no one on the road today – all to myself

I am trying a new bike today. Well not exactly new like out of a store but one that buddy gave me to use in the Motor City Tri on Jun 14. I flew on this bike. Record time from my house to work 65 minutes.

Since I made record time, I decided to try the new Dequinder Cut downtown.

Arrrr, another great morning wasted listening too the weather peeps

All news stations and radar called for rain today. So I decided since it would be raining, that I can sleep for another hour – no need to wake up at 5:30am to start my day. But as soon as that sun gleamed through the window to wake me up – I cursed Ben Baily’s name!

I pondered for a moment to take the car since I was late, but I made a last minute decision for another bus/bike combo.

I threw the Gary Fisher on the Schoenherr bus and headed downtown. I will take the Van Dyke home and ride home from the 15 mile stop.

Tuesday - cloudy

I woke up at 5:30 willing to get on the bicycle but the chill in the air and the damp roads suggested otherwise. So I shut off the alarm and rolled over for another hour of quality sleep time.

I did take the bicycle up to the Schoenherr bus stop and took the SMART bus in today. I figure I can work later in the day and take the Van Dyke bus home. From there I can ride the bicycle from the Van Dyke stop to the house.

See you on the road..
